My first 3 weeks in Cambodia will be inextricably tied up
in my memory of the BURLY GUESTHOUSE. In Phnom Pen you have accommodation of
all sorts from the famous Raffles @$200
a night to very basic at the $ 5 level. VSO use the Burly @ $7 a night.
Basic, no air con but traditional for VSO and convenient for seeing the city.
It also seems to double up as a place where couples pop in, often middle aged
locals who drive Lexus and girls who could easily be dressed up for an Irish
night out.
Below is the bed of sweat and continual fan blowing interspersed with
numerous showers a day
Best thing about the Burly for me is that I was one of
the lucky volunteers who didn’t have to share accommodation. Most had to and
given the jet lag, the stickiness of the weather and the small size of the
rooms it is a great prep for the hardships ahead. 2nd best thing was the charming
receptionist Sy who was a lovely, welcoming, kind man with very good English.
Here he is wishing me bon voyage to Mondulkiri. I’m the one in the stripy shirt
made a few days previously by a local tailor for the princely sum of $ 12 ( almost two nights in the Burly)
Bye Sy, the nice guy and bye bye Burly, must try. Next stop Mondulkiri.
