carrying home shopping didn't give me a second glance
At the best of times I’m not a great shopper but shops
of all types are impossible to avoid in Phnom Penh, they are everywhere and
open for long hours. Some are for the well off and western tourists ranging
down to vey local and basic Here are some images of shopping in PP.
You might say Phnom Penh is a “deadly” place for shopping.
But the living must live and having fruit is highly
recommended. So you could buy it in so many ways, as follows
Or if you are LUCKY (name of biggest supermarket chain
in Cambodia) and can afford to pay top dollar you can buy in splendid air
conditioned surroundings.
Top dollar is an appropriate term as Cambodia operates
with 2 currencies that are interchangeable. The dollar and the Real. $1 = R
4000. Under $1 you get Real. So if you pay $2 for a coconut costing $1-50 you
get R 2000 back in change. R100 worth 2.5 cents is the smallest note and I
haven’t seen any coins
After taking a couple of photos in Lucky’s I was asked
to refrain from taking pictures.
And as we know well in Ireland that shopping does have
a down side and refuse collection is still at an infant stage in Cambodia
although there are people who sift through it in an attempt to make a living.
Sunday is a big day for me, I head up the country to my placement so will hopefully have some provencial news for you then. Mondulkiri (meaning centre of the hills) here comes trouble !!! |
